Gen Con 2012: Interview with Dungeon Crawlers Radio
Michael Tresca (MT): Please tell us a little about your company. Revan (R): Dungeon Crawlers Radio is an online internet show that is based upon geek culture by exposing listeners to popular artist, writers, and actors from the gaming community and abroad. View slideshow: The Cast of Dungeon Crawlers Radio MT: And tell us about you. R: Dungeon Crawlers Radio is a team made up of four on air personalities that really enjoy bringing the world of geek to your door. Revan is the founder and creator of DCR. His goal every week is not only to deliver a spectacular show but to bring the guest and the fans together outside of conventions. As A Guy Named Joe burns up the mic with geek passion from the moment the on-air sign lights up in the studio till everyone signs off. He delivers such excitement during the show that we counter balance him with Flagoon. Flagoon is the comic relief that keeps the fans laughing throughout the show with his strategically witty remarks. However, don't be too fooled by Flagoon he is also quick to play devils advocate just to see what happens. As we wind down the show we wrap everything into a nice little package with Firebird. She brings the female perspective of geek nation to the show with such intensity it's hard not to listen in just to see what's going on. Dungeon Crawlers Radio Photo credit: Dungeon Crawlers Radio Video: Dungeon Crawlers Radio w/ Revan and Malak - Mondays 6PM-9PM (Mountain, -7GMT) Dungeon Crawlers Radio is currently in its fifth year of being one of the greatest and most informative Geek radio show out there! MT: Was this your first Gen Con? R: Yes this was our first year at Gen Con and I have to say it was a little daunting. We have some Con’s back home but nothing that compares to this. But it was a great experience and we really got the name of our show out there Yes, Gen Con 2012 was the largest convention that Dungeon Crawlers Radio has attended. MT: How was your Gen Con experience? R: Like I said it was a little daunting but overall it was a great experience for us. It allowed us to see people face to face that we’ve had on the show in the past and it was such a great and friendly atmosphere. But I have to say when those does first opened up and we walked in…It was like walking into geek heaven! The experience of Gen Con for Dungeon Crawlers Radio was very positive. It allowed us to connect with the fans and guests that have been on the show. If we had to describe one memorable moment from Gen Con, it would be when the front doors first opened up and we walked in...it was like walking into geek heaven. MT: What type of gamer will be interested in your podcast? R: We believe that gamers are more than just a close-knit community or a sub-culture. Everyone is a geek at heart to some degree. We all have a childlike vice that we engage in be it football, table-top RPGs, music or movies. Everyone geeks out at something and we found that the common thread between demographics is that not everyone uses the same term for it. There's still a stigma attached to the word. Part of our mission is to bring all types of nerds, geeks, and dweebs together in a positive way. When we introduce ourselves we often find ourselves saying, "If you own at least one piece of merchandise from Star Wars, then we're the show for you." Even if table-top games and fantasy authors aren't up someone's alley, chances are we have something that is. Maybe they like table top, video games, MMOs (massively multiplayer online), or RPG (role playing games) we cover it all. However, we chose RPG's as our "bread and butter" because we firmly believe that it's one of the few things that legitimately still brings people together face to face and have a good time. Who can't get behind that? MT: What was your favorite aspect of Gen Con? R: It's not easy picking just one part out of a convention to be your favorite since they all work together in harmony to put on a spectacular show. However, if we were to choose we’d have to say the people. It's what makes large conventions possible. Getting to meet people who develop and design the products you love, it's every geeks dream. Wizards of the Coast helped to make that dream come true for thousands of fans. They were especially wonderful to meet and work with during our stay at Gen Con. MT: What did you think of the D&D Next playtest? What surprised you about it? R: A Guy Named Joe found it very accessible and easy to learn as he used the two previous editions as a comparison. He found that Next was a very fast and intense game to play as he clearly remembers having to go over some notes because he thought he had missed something. With a little more polish and a few bugs worked out it should easily be a fast seller. D&D Next gets the "A Guy Named Joe-stamp of approval." MT: Where can fans find you next? Going to any other cons this year? R: This year we finished the convention circuit with Gen Con and we will be looking forward to the start of 2013. You can follow us through 2013 by visiting us at www.dungeoncrawlersradio.com and other media outlets. MT: Where can we find out more about your company online? R: You can find us at www.DungeonCrawlersRadio.com, or on facebook, twitter, Youtube, Google+, and you can download our archived shows from iTunes. MT: Any other information you'd like to provide? R: Since the start of the Dungeon Crawlers Radio we have grown through the support and dedication of our listeners and sponsors. We would like to thank everyone who takes the time to show their support. You can always find us every Monday evening broadcasting live from Epic Puzzles and Games located in West Valley City, Utah. This last summer we packed our traveling bag and began our trip with high hopes and excitement. We arrived at the local high speed transportation facility only to run into a man who has navigated a star ship and confounded the Bazinga singing Sheldon time and time again. Next we ran into an old friend who was still finishing writing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. We boarded the transportation vehicle and away we went. Several hours later, a movie, a few chapters in my book, and we landed in the land of colts with the high hopes of promised glory. We arrived at the convention center where Gen Con was to be held only to realize…That the world of geek was much larger then we realized! We got our passes and entered into the exhibit hall and squeak with excitement and awe. We were like little Kender running through the hall with every little thing catching our eye and distracting us from our goal. Finally we found our way to the hall booth of Wizards to find the way guards by the dark elf Drizzt Do’Urden and his faithful feline companion. Within those walls we found ourselves quaking in fear before the mighty Lloth as she toward over us demanding fealty and we quickly begged for our lives! We fled from Lloth’s gave to find ourselves free once more to roam the land and speak to the many others that were within the booth of Wizards. It is hear that we united with a friend and companion from broadcast past, Shelly Mazzanoble! We had our Warrior, Jack of all trades, Diplomat, and part time sorceress. What could go wrong? Computer glitches, hunger, and sore feet! But we braved it all! We witnessed the many great things to come with D&D Next at the keynote event. We received treasures and accolades from the guardians of the booth of Wizards and we returned home champions. We were tired; the days were long, and the adventure grand! When we arrived at the local high speed transportation facility we found ourselves return home with the bard, Hickman. Yesterday the net showed you the teaser trailer/clip for the new DC superhero series coming to The CW, Arrow. The network has released a full promo trailer for the Green Arrow series offering us a little bit more footage from the series and story details. It's going to be an awesome action packed series, and I think it looks like it will be worth watching. The show stars Stephen Arnell in the title role, and it looks like he's going to do a pretty solid job. It still would have been cool if they got Smallville's Justin Hartley to reprise the role though. Here's the Synopsis: After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. The show hits The CW this fall on Wednesdays from 8:00-9:00 PM. Watch the new trailer and let us know if you think it looks good! Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have tag teamed so many novels of the years that they have become a household name to fantasy readers. Rage of the Dragon is the third installment in their latest series, the Dragonships of Vindras. Here is a blurb from the inside flap of the cover. Skylan Ivorson is the gods-chosen Chief of all Vindras clans. But the gods from whom the Vindrasi draw their earthdwelling power are besieged by a new generation of gods who are challenging them for the powers of creation. The only way to stop these brash interlopers lies within the Five Bones of the Vektia Dragon—the primal dragon forged during the creation of the world—which have been lost for generations. With the Gods of the New Dawn amassing a vast army, Skylan finds allies in former enemies. Calling upon the ogres to fight their common foes, the Vindrasi soon find themselves in the middle of an even larger war. Skylan and his Vindrasi clan must sail the Sea of Tears into the heart of the Forbidden Empire of the Cyclops, to implement a cunning yet delicate plan that risks his life and leadership at every corner. But a new enemy lies deep in the sea, one who draws upon powers never harnessed by land dwellers. For me just seeing the names Weis and Hickman on the cover is enough for me to want to read it. When you add in gods going to war and dragons I can’t turn the pages fast enough. It is becoming quite typical of series written by this duo to start off rather slow as your trudging along in the story. What really makes Weis and Hickman good at what they do though is that there is always payoff for your patience. They take their time building the story, introducing you to the characters. Perhaps we have become a cultural too inundated with technology and instant gratification that we cannot wait for the action to start. Well, you have to wait with a good book. I will tell you this much, when the action starts, it gets your heart beating. It is in conflict that Weis and Hickman truly shine. The battle scenes in this book are thrilling and so well conceived and written that it is easy to visualize yourself standing there at Skylan’s side. This is good, fun, fantasy. If you haven’t started this series yet, do so, and know that you need to have a little patience, let the story grow and you will be rewarded. I’ll be honest though and nostalgia’s sake their best work will always be the Dragonlance Chronicles. However, that being said, this is still a great story that is well written and most assuredly worthy of a read. The fans of Community came out to support their favorite TV show to save it when it was in trouble. Not only did they save it from going off the air, but they helped it land another season! NBC has officially decided to bring the hilarious comedy series back for another season of greatness! The fourth season only got a 13-episode order this time around, but at least it will be back! There's still no word on if series creator Dan Harmon and actor Chevy Chase will be back. I hope they decide to come back. As this actually may end up being the last season of the series. The shows star Joel McHale tweeted the following, Dear #Community fans, You are the best people in the world. We’re renewed for 13 eps. Couldn’t have done it without you. Your welcome. Disney's Star Wars Weekends always has some sweet stuff up their Jedi robes, this year is no different. It has been confirmed that you will be able to get yourself frozen in carbonite or at least you'll be able to get your head scanned and have a cool little 8 inch figurine of yourself frozen in the iconic pose from The Empire Strikes Back. A couple things you have to do though to get your hands on your frozen-self: Make a reservation by calling 407-WDW-TECH (407-939-8324). Also, get yourself over to FL and dish out $100 bucks. A couple things you do NOT have to do: Hire a bounty hunter to capture and freeze someone, only to have him go down like a punk after he's just been hanging around your pad for a few months doing who knows what. You also don't have to get choked to death by a half-naked princess of a planet that has been destroyed... Sounds fair to me. If I could get down to Florida and do this, before they scan my face I'd have to pull a Han Solo and say, "I know." Either they will be confused, and ask, 'Know what?' Or they will say, "You're the hundreth assh*ole to say that!!!" Let us know if you're planning to drop the Imperial Credits on some custom carbonite! Star Wars Weekends will take place at Disneyworld Orlando, FL from May 18th through June 16th. Over the past 50 years James Bond has had no shortage of lovely ladies. Shortage of good scripts or directors... maybe. But of babes? Never. Here's a very well-made infographic of all the Bond girls put together by CableTV.Com celebrating the Golden Anniversary of 007. My vote for the hottest Bond girl since I've been born has to be Famke Janssen. Her look is totally dated now, unlike the timeless bond girls of the now cool again 60's, but she had my full attention in Goldeneye. Cutest has to be Gemma Arterton in Quantum of Solace. Stupidest... Halle Berry. She was the icing on the "this movie is terrible" cake. Who are your favorite Bond girls??? Here's a quick casting update letting you know that Luke Evans will play the villain in Fast and Furious 6. Earlier this month we learned that he was offered the role, and now it looks like he has taken it, as he's in the final stages of negotiations. The actor joins Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriquez, and possibly Gina Carano in the heist film that is said to be "their most dangerous adventure yet." Evan's has recently been seen in Immortals, The Raven, and will also be in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. I'm sure Evans will make a great villain in this franchise, and I'm looking forward to seeing Justin Lin's transition from street racing to heists. |
